How heavily do you find making decisions weights on your mind? Do you find when you have a choice to make it keeps you up at night or makes you feel worried? Well perhaps it’s time to take a lesson from the classroom of Bucks Fizz.

People have a variety of techniques for making decisions. But it is often not so much the method we use, but the time we take, which creates problems for our wellbeing. We frequently put off making decisions waiting to find out more information. In itself, this is not a bad thing, but how much information is enough for us to make a choice?

CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bazos, has said it is the speed of decision making which often defines success and that we are frequently better off making a decision with 70% of the information we’d like rather than waiting for 90% of the information to become available. To put this in Bucks Fizzian terms, there comes a time for making your mind up.

So what causes this delay and what impact does it have on our wellbeing? In many respects delaying may seem logical. But returning to the lesson of the song, indecision can come back to bite us so we need to have more trust in our own instincts.

Often, our waiting is informed by fear and self-doubt. In most cases we will never have all the information we would like to make a wholly informed decision as we don’t know what the future holds. The important thing is to make a decision with enough information, which fits with our vision and values. This is something I often focus on in life coaching others.

So, if we are going to learn from the wisdom of Bucks Fizz, knowing every piece of information we might want, and everything the future might hold, isn’t something we need to worry about. What is important for our wellbeing is that we know how we want things to be. That’s making our mind up.
