Environmental and Sustainability Policy Statement
I, Dr Dave Wood, as the sole proprietor of Metanoeo, recognise my responsibility to protect the environment and promote sustainability in my business activities. Given the low-impact, service-based nature of life coaching and coach training, this policy is focused on reducing energy consumption, minimising waste, and promoting ethical procurement, particularly in digital and travel aspects.
I am committed to continual improvement in my environmental performance and compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and regulations.
Energy and Digital Consumption
Since the business operates largely virtually (online coaching and training), the primary environmental impact is related to energy use and digital consumption.
- Energy Efficiency: I will use energy-efficient electronic devices (laptops, monitors, etc.) and ensure all equipment is switched off or set to low-power mode when not in use. Where possible, I will source energy from a supplier committed to renewable energy.
- Virtual Meetings: I will prioritise online coaching and training sessions to eliminate the need for client/trainee travel, significantly reducing carbon emissions.
- Data Management: I will regularly review and delete unnecessary files, emails, and cloud data storage, as digital data storage consumes energy in data centres
Waste Management and Paper Use
I aim to operate a near-paperless business.
- Minimising Paper: All client and training documents (workbooks, contracts, notes, and invoices) will be created, stored, and exchanged digitally (PDFs, cloud storage) unless explicitly requested otherwise by the client/trainee.
- Printing: When printing is necessary (e.g., policy documents, essential forms), I will use recycled paper and print double-sided (duplex) in monochrome.
- Recycling: I will ensure all waste generated from home office or training venues (paper, plastics, cardboard) is correctly separated and recycled using local authority services.
- Equipment Disposal: Old electronic equipment will be recycled responsibly through approved Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) channels.
Travel and Transport
When in-person sessions or training require travel, I will prioritise low-carbon options.
- Priority Order: Travel choices will follow this hierarchy: 1) Virtual Meeting, 2) Public Transport (train/bus), 3) Cycling/Walking, 4) Low-emission vehicle (or shared transport).
- Venue Selection: When booking training venues, I will select locations that are easily accessible via public transport to encourage sustainable travel for participants.
- Business Travel: I will minimise non-essential business travel and consolidate necessary trips to reduce overall emissions.
Procurement and Ethical Sourcing
I will make responsible choices when purchasing goods and services for the business.
- Sustainable Supplies: When office supplies are required, I will prioritise those that are recycled, recyclable, durable, and ethically sourced.
- Training Materials (if physical): Any physical resources, gifts, or merchandise used for training will be sourced from sustainable, local, or fair-trade suppliers where practical.
- Longevity: I will invest in high-quality, long-lasting IT equipment to extend its usable lifespan and reduce replacement frequency.
Measurement and Review
This policy will be reviewed and updated annually alongside our other policies.
- Objectives: I will set a simple, measurable target for sustainability each year (e.g., "Maintain a paper usage of less than 50 sheets per year," or "Track and aim to reduce annual business mileage").
- Policy Communication: I will communicate the commitment to sustainability to clients and trainees, encouraging them to support these efforts (e.g., by opting for digital-only resources).
